Don’t ever leave me alone
she finds herself saying
to the soft yellow-tinted sky
as it wakes up all the cold things.
I can’t imagine life without
the strangeness of you.
I do remember this one time.
Feeling like an addict might
being told to stop.
I cried so hard I thought
surely puke will come
and fix these tears into
something even more dramatic.
But it didn’t.
Just hollow cheeks
new fine lines
the palest skin
and acceptance that it’s
the strangeness of me.
If I can’t speak this to you
I shall speak it to my pen.
My fingers.
Because it’s the world
I have created.
The soft yellow-tinted sky
is the most romantic thing I’ll see
all day,
but those are my eyes
that do the seeing.
