my city, my rules

“To be lost and to be found, that is the life span of love.”

Ever get so sick of your own brain that the only solution is to dive deeper into what it’s consuming or loving? Yeah, I don’t know what I mean by that either. IT’S A LIST, BABY!

1. A perfume fixation

When I was a young girl, my mom worked as a makeup artist for Chanel. She would bring home boxes of samples: eye shadows, lipsticks, fragrances, nail polish. My fascination with fragrance (and stealing her makeup) was born from that, but it was enhanced one day at a friend’s house. I remember she had a glass tray of perfumes on her bureau as if it were a luxury item I could never imitate. I, a mere child who still made her Beanie Babies talk to one another, collecting fragrances on a mirrored tray?!

It stuck in my brain all these years, and I must admit I now have an addiction to collecting fragrances. This past month, Juno Birch made me buy Marc Jacobs’ latest scent, Perfect Absolute. Banana undertones!? I am in love. Sometimes, after I shower with nowhere to go, I spritz myself and walk around the house in my own heavenly cloud.

2. Frankenstein

How many times is too many times to watch this fucking movie? I’m not going to bore anyone with a review that could never do it justice, but I will say Guillermo del Toro understands the heart to a terrifying degree. He knows how to make empathy and soulfulness and tragedy bleed on screen to the point where my skin prickles with satisfaction every second.

I have to share a memory connected to one of his films. I was leaving the theatre after seeing Pan’s Labyrinth. I was rendered completely speechless and hollow. I walked to my boyfriend-at-the-time’s car, he had this weird “no talking about the movie until we’re in the car” rule. We drove for at least five minutes in silence before he finally said, “Well? What did you think?”

I sobbed the hardest I believe I had ever cried for the entire drive home.

Long way to say: Guillermo del Toro, you magical man, you’ve done it again. It was beautiful, and we need, need, need more films like it.

3. Vegan Collagen Café Latte

I’m an iced coffee darling, but lately at work I keep making (do not note the mess please) a pistachio milk based latte with ground cinnamon, a scoop of Vedge vegan collagen and a touch of raw sugar. The routine is like a warm hug I need before I open emails.

Will never show my award winning barista / roastery owning sister my attempt at latte art.

4. This picture of Audrey Hepburn

5. Dark-Cherry Liquid Lip Tint

This past August, while my sister was in town, she gave me this lip tint lamenting that it didn’t work against her complexion. I took it and have since stayed obsessed. Not only do I love it because she brought it specifically for me, but every time I put it on, I get to think of her.

6. A bachelorette that ends at a hockey game

Did I need to order double vodka clubs all night and wake up in toxic pain? Absolutely not. Did I enjoy the dress compliments and the intoxicating surge of love and excitement that bubbled over among all these girls more? Yes. Yes, I did. I can’t wait for the wedding.

7. Water Thief

I couldn’t capture her face fully submerged in my glass of water for the full effect, but this (very new) nightly water stealing performance by Gigi (whom, may I add, gets plenty of triple-filtered cold water throughout her day) cracks me up.

8. Writing in Asheville

I had two separate moments at this cafe in Asheville where I set aside time to pour out the need to be creative instead of financial. When I take photos of these moments, they remind me of who I try to be, how I try to live,

and I’m grateful.
